11 eye-catching, creative, classic and unexpected Advent Calendars for 2013

Advent calendars have a long history in Germany and can be traced back to the 19th Century. Religious families made a chalk line for every day in December until Christmas Eve. Some also used the Adventcandle - a candle for each of the 24 days until Christmas.

This tradition evolved and has spread throughout Europe and North America. It is now beloved by children and adults alike. Filled with sweet treats, small toys and encouraging notes, they are opened every morning from December 1st until Christmas.  Kids impatiently wake up each morning to find out what gifts the wonderful fairies have left over night... It makes you and your little ones smile as you get closer to Christmas each day and helps to create that Christmas magic we all expect from this period of year.

Originally, the images in Advent Calendars came from the Hebrew Bible. Many calendars today have no religious content and come in a variety of beautiful forms, designs and colours. Have a look at 11 eye-catching, creative, classic and unexpected Advent Calendars for 2013 I've seen around the web.
